Craig’s heart was pounding. He closed his eyes and whispered, “Craig, ol’ boy, I think you’ve found your answer. If you go out there and stake your claim, a great portion of that thousand million dollars can be yours! You won’t be the kid with the silver spoon in your mouth any longer. You’ll make your own fortune and be rich all on your own!”

He opened his eyes, looked at the front page of the Tribune again, and banged his fist on the desktop.

“Yes! This is it!”

Craig eased back in his chair, folded his hands behind his neck, and stared at the ceiling. “Just think of it,” he whispered to himself. “Your very own fortune, dug out of the ground and maybe dipped out of some stream with your own hands!”

That evening at bedtime, Maddie held Craig’s hand as the Turley family and Kathy Ross climbed the winding staircase. She looked up at him and said, “Craig, do you love me?”

He looked down and grinned. “Do I love you? You know the answer to that, don’t you?”

“I want to hear it.”

Craig squeezed the hand he was holding as they climbed higher. “Of course I love you, baby sister.”

“Do you love me enough to do me a real big favor?”

“Of course. What is it?”

“Will you go to church with us tomorrow?”

Craig noticed Kathy’s eyes on him as Maddie waited for a reply.

He bent over and kissed Maddie’s forehead. “I have too many things to do tomorrow, little sister. I simply won’t have time to go to church. But just because I can’t go to church with you doesn’t mean I don’t love you. Okay?”

Wallace and Kathy had stopped on the stairs also. They looked on as disappointment showed in the child’s eyes.

“Okay.”

Wallace prayed in his heart, Lord, please bring Craig to the place where he won’t make excuses. I want so badly for him to hear Pastor Finney preach.
